UFC 85 Bedlam-June 7 2008
By Joe Samui
What looks to be a great card on paper must have caused about 10,000 headaches as this is one of the most "cursed" cards in UFC history with fighter after fighter dropping out or dropping off of the card due to arrest, illness or just bad timing. Without going into the drama surrounding the approach of the card, i'll just list the current card as of today and my thoughts and predictions... Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Silva Matt Hughes is one of if not the most dominant champs in UFC history but after losing twice to the now reigning champ in his division, many people are speculating that he has nowhere to go. Thiago Silva has been racking up some very impressive wins over the likes of John Alessio, Tony DeSouza,Chris Lytle and Karo Parisyan so he is a legitimate challenge to Hughes and if he does win, a legitimate 170lb Title contender. My pick...Matt Hughes by Decision Michael Bisping vs. Jason Day In one of the "cursed" fights, UFC poster boy Bisping goes up against the unknown and probably outclassed Jason Day in Day's first UFC appearance. Personally i'm hoping Day finds a way to win this as i'm still pissed off about the gift decision Bisping got over Matt Hammill. My pick...Bisping Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick This one should be an all out stand up war. Both fighters will come prepared to please the british crowd with a slug fest, making this one of my easiest fights to pick. Swick will have a distinct height, weight and reach advantage over the very tough Davis. My pick...Swick by KO Nate Marquardt vs. Thales Leites Marquardt has a long track record of winning fights, only time he has lost in recent memory was against the current undisputed UFC 185 pound champion. Thales Leites has a 12-1 record but the quality of fighters he's been up against is not as good as Marquardt. My pick...Marquardt by Decision Fabricio Werdum vs. Brandon Vera This one should be a very technical fight whether standing or on the ground. Both fighters have shown they can fight at this level, Werdum has neutralized some of the very best in the fight game with awkward boxing and superior Jiu Jitsu skills, Brandon Vera has excellent standup skills and clinch game, we haven't had much of a chance to see him on the ground. Vera was completely unimpressive in his last fight against former UFC Heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, with Sylvia neutralizing Vera's Muay Thai skills and stalling his way to a fan snoozing decision. If Werdum wins this one he should be a title contender, not the same with Vera who will need at least one more quality win before getting that shot. My pick...Werdum by Decision Jorge Rivera vs. Martin Kampmann Looking forward to this one. Both fighters have left their mark on UFC competitors. Rivera has been susceptible to both vicious KO's and submission attempts both of which Kampmann is famous for. Rivera will stand toe to toe with anyone and leave it all in the Octagon, Kampmann will be all too happy to oblige. My pick...Kampmann by Submission |
