Travelling to Koh Samui Thailand
By Joe Samui
Koh Samui is a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, and as such is accessible only by air and sea. Whether your trip starts in Europe, America or Eritrea, chances are you will be flying in to Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok and from there will have to arrange for the next leg of your journey to Koh Samui. Inhabited for more than 1,500 years, the island of Koh Samui has only recently been "discovered" as of the 1970's, when adventurous backpackers found it to be an idyllic hidden tropical gem. Those same backpackers had no airport to fly into, they typically took the train from Bangkok to Surat Thani where they arranged for bus travel to the ferry piers near Don Sak. From Don Sak, a couple of hours on the ferry would take them past the Angthong National Marine Park and within sight of the island of Koh Phangan which would become the home of the Full Moon Party, attracting up to 20,000 revellers per month at the Full Moon. As time passed, Bangkok Air opened what has become an award winning airport on the island of Koh Samui, allowing for a very short 45 minute flight from Bangkok or Phuket, relieving travellers from the tiresome 12 hour train or overnight bus ride south from Bangkok. Along with the new airport came a new type of traveller to the island and those new travellers have made Koh Samui into the 5 and 6 star resort and ultra-luxurious private villa capital of Thailand. With the arrival of multi-national hotel corporations such as the Four Seasons,Hilton, Starwood and Karma it inevitably attracted famous names like Giorgio Armani who is currently building several multi-million dollar villas on the island. Koh Samui has not forgotten the backpackers, there are still literally thousands of budget rooms for them to choose from as well as an eclectic choice of restaurants and bars, sometimes run by those same backpackers that started arriving in the 70's and 80's, many of whom never left. On those occassions where progress has encroached on solitude, remember that there are at least 50 other smaller islands in the Gulf of Thailand to choose from, all offering an incredible array of activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling, hiking, sunbathing and sight-seeing. There is a reason that Robert de Niro's character in the Ben Stiller movie Meet the Parents chose Koh Samui for a honeymoon gift for his daughter, and chances are that while it may seem like a long way to travel, Koh Samui has more than enough to offer you once you arrive. You may end up like the rest of us, so enchanted with the islands that we never left! |
