Full Moon Party, Koh Pha Ngan Thailand
By Joe Samui
Today is May 20,2008 and for those of you whom are unaware of the possibilities and consequences of that date, let me take just a moment to enlighten you to the Full Moon Party. The Full Moon Party is held every month of every year on the full moon. Not much of a surprise there. What may surprise you is that anywhere up to 20,000 of your fellow countrymen and women make their way to this previously uninhabited, unassuming and undeveloped island in the middle of nowhere specifically for the purpose of celebrating the Full Moon. Ok, some of them come here for the music and some for the dancing, a few even come here specifically for the mushroom milkshakes but as a theme, the Full Moon Party is now recognized along with Ibiza Spain and Black Rock City Nevada as one of the "must go" parties and social events on each years party calendar. Haad Rin beach has been the home of the Full Moon Party for an eternity. Well, maybe not an entire eternity but at least as long as your hangover plus or minus twenty years. Reggae,House,Hip Hop and psychedelic trance music are just a few of the sounds you will hear up and down Haad Rin beach throughout the night. Some of the other sounds you will hear include drunken off pitch renditions of national anthems and the ever present yelping in response to being tagged by another fire-poi juggling routine gone wrong. Bodies litter the beach in various stages of drunkenness and dress, pick-pockets find easy prey amongst the customers in line for mushroom milkshakes and long separated couples stumble through the sand in half hearted efforts to find their old soulmate while the other half is searching out new ones. While there is no truth to the rumor that the 1978 zombie movie Dawn of the Dead was filmed at the Koh Samui pier on the morning after a full moon party, it is quite obvious that the next sequel to this franchise should be. Paradise Bungalows is the original location of the very first full moon party, however as there are no known brain cells left over from that event it is hard to authenticate this. What is known though is that there was enough energy gathered and stored from that first event to spawn decades worth of follow ups, regularly and with every full moon for more than twenty years now. For those of you who have not yet been inspired to contact your local authorities to report this event, tonight, May 20 2008 is your latest opportunity to join in, sip on a few buckets of Sang Som and coke and bust out your latest dance moves, however, in the best interests of humanity, please leave your favorite robot routine at home. If you are considering a trip to a future Full Moon Party, I will now dispense a bit of advice in an effort to prepare you for the shock and awe version of a hangover that awaits you... 1) Eat. You are about to consume copious amounts of alcohol and if you really want to make an impression with your projectile vomiting display it is important to ingest foods containing as many different colors as possible. Corn is always a big favorite for this, as well as pizza. For extra marks, try the squid. 2) Drink plenty of water. Passing out on the beach and absorbing it through osmosis does not count. If you want your hangover to last less than three days, drink at least one full gallon of fresh water prior to and during the party. Yes, beer is full of water but does not count for the purpose of satisfying this section. 3) Wear sandals/flip flops/Palm fronds, anything really as your feet will be exposed to a vast quantity and scope of germs and colored glass on the beach. Extra points if you use banana leaves to surf the vomit pools on the beach. 4) Remember where you are. Sure, you are on a very small island, however, the boat that is waiting to pick you up and return you to Koh Samui is not where you are currently, it is waiting for you where you are supposed to be. Your absence will only prolong the duration and severity of your hangover so it's no good trying to remember where you are based on the hair color of the person dancing in front of you. 5) Have fun. It is a party after all. If you are lucky enough to be there for the December or January Full Moon Party you are likely to be celebrating this decades old event with many thousands of like minded people from all over the world. Enjoy. |
