Disc Golf
By Joe Samui
Disc Golf is the fastest growing outdoor sport in the world. What started with two guys, two beach frisbees and a 12 pack has evolved into an International Disc Golf Tour played all across North America, Europe, Japan and even the remote island of Koh Samui Thailand. The game is based on its older brother but instead of hitting a golf ball with a club, you throw a modern bevelled edge golf disc at tremendous speeds and sometimes with tremendous accuracy towards a "pole hole" and once inside the basket, your hole is complete and you move on to the next of what is typically 18 holes in a golf round. Recreational players now have more than 2,000 disc golf courses around the world to choose from, and more than 90% of those disc golf courses are free to play. In the United States it is most common to find these disc golf courses on public land such as a State Park, County or City Park but the game is evolving along with new plastics technology enabling a few professional players to throw discs in excess of 600 feet with the world record being an amazing throw over 800 feet. This means that new and larger areas are required in order to provide the appropriate amount of space for fun and safety. Private land owners are now converting their land into disc golf courses and charging a small fee, typically 5 dollars or less for a round and in some cases per day. Disc Golf is the fastest growing outdoor sport for a reason, everyone can throw a frisbee and it is a tremendous amount of fun. The professional disc golf association has set up a website with an international course directory which will point you to the park closest to you so that next time you are looking for something new and fun to do, try Disc Golf. |
