Appalachian Trail-Super Highway for Super Hikers

By Joe Samui

The Appalachian Trail stretches out over 14 U.S. States and 2175 miles, making it the longest continuously marked and maintained hiking trail in the US. Starting (or finishing) in Georgia, the trail meanders through 6 different National Parks and 8 National Forests and brings hikers in contact with more than 2,000 different endangered, threatened and rare animal and plant species.

Designated in 1968 as the first National Scenic Trail, more than 9,000 adventurous travellers have claimed to have hiked the entire distance. Typically lasting about 4-5 months, a "through-hike" as it is commonly referred to is an enormous undertaking for those who attempt it. Logistically speaking, each hiker will have to plan food drops, equipment repair, money transfers etc in order to make the trip hassle free. While some begin the trip with 50-60 pounds of equipment, others practice a less is more philosohy, leaving behind the bulkier pieces like tents and heavy hiking boots, opting instead for overnight stays in the shelters that have been built approximately every 20 miles.

With more than 3/4th's of the US population within a short days drive of the Appalachian Trail, it would seem that your daily hike would be continuously interrupted by highways and cities but this is not the case. One of the first things you will notice on your hike is how quiet the mountains are and how rarely you notice any other individuals on the trail. Solitude and a feeling of peace and connection to nature are prominent here.

Whether you choose to hike a National Park or Forest, State/Region or perhaps the entire Appalachian Trail at once or over a period of years, remember that it takes thousands of volunteers to "blaze" the trail, making it easy for the rest of us to find our way. If you are a regular hiker or just enjoy being outdoors, please consider volunteering for a day at your local park, keeping it clean for the next person. Pack out what you packed in, dispose of any waste properly and please keep your animals under control if you bring them with you.

Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail each have something to offer you on your next vacation.
